The Help by Solene Lorier
Summary:
The
help is a novel publish in 2009 wrote by Kathryn Stockett. The
film is adapted by Tate Taylor in 2011. The cast are Viola Davis aka
Aibileen, Emma Stone aka Skeeter, Bryce Dallas Howard aka Hilly and
Octavia Spencer aka Minny Jackson. The scene takes place in the
Mississippi, in Jackson city, during the Civil Right Movement in
1963. The main character "Skeeter",Eugenia Phelan is
a young journalist who goes back to Jackson city because her mother
is sick. Skeeter doesn't agree with the racistic attitudes of her
friends towards the maid. Skeeter doesn't understand why the white
people don't like the black people and why this segregation is
happening .The second main character, Skeeter's best friend ,Hilly
Walters Holbrook is a young woman, she's president of the Jackson
Junior League and active in all sorts of charity. But she is also a
horrible person , extremely racist and a fantastic
representation of the South's view during the Civil Rights Movement.
In the film there are two important maids. The first one is Aibileen
Clark who work for Elizabeth Leefolt. She takes care of the Leefolt's
daughter, Mae Mobley. She lives alone since her boy is dead. The
second maid is Minny Jackson. She is Hilly's maid but she is fired
when she decides to use Hilly's toilet. She
is married and she has five children.
During
the film we follow the maid's life with the white people. Skeeter
became friend with Aibeleen and they try to write a book about the
working conditions in Jackson City.
Critical:
The
film is very interesting because we follow the maid's life during
their dark period at the USA. In the movie, we can see
the maid's living conditions and how the white people treated them.
In the Help, we have the point of view of one white girl who she
struggle with the racial discrimination. All the film long , we are
captivated by Skeeter's story and by the maid's story too.
Important
scene:
The
scene inside the film which impact me, is during Elizabeth's
daugther's birthday party. It is very interesting because we can see
what Hilly did to treat the black woman, we can also see her
veritable personality. Also we can remark that Skeeter can't say
anything to help Aibileen. Aibileen can say “No” to Hilly because
she works for her best friend Elizabeth. This situations in the
garden is very interesting because we can notice who is the leader.
A good article with an original choice for the key scene! Nevertheless you don’t make reproaches; your point of view seems not to be objective. Congrats to do this critic alone!
