The movie: The Help, review written by Victor LY and Pierre ESLINE
Our pitch:
The Help is a period
historical drama made by Tate Taylor in 2011. The film is adapted from the
novel of the same name which was written by Kathryn Stockett. The main casting is
mainly comprised of the very famous Emma Stone at the main character’s role and
Viola Davis at the main black woman of the movie. The story deals with racial
segregation in the USA. It tells the story of Skeeter’s fight against this
segregation. She wants to write a book with the point of view of black maids:
the two main women will be Aibileen and Minnie who are going to rebel in order
to have a better treatment.
Our review:
The Help is a very touching movie which enables to make you think about the black
people’s life conditions. This thematic is pretty committed, original and deals
with problematics, obviously less present, but unfortunately always here
nowadays. You will be transported by a lot of emotions during the film,
it was our case. The film will satisfy everybody: funny scenes, sad’s
ones, even romance, maybe the action’s lovers will miss some adrenaline during
the film but will still appreciate The Help. About the movie itself, the
actors are very convincing: you will want to help and defend characters; and
hate other ones (hello Miss Hilly). On the whole, the film is very good, maybe
not the year's best film, but really interesting.
The most important scene:
One of the most important scenes of the movie was, for us, the third scene
on the bus. We can see Yule May Davis, new Hilly’s maid arrested by policemen.
She has stolen Miss Hilly’s ring to allow her twins to go to college… Actually,
she was a good maid and asked Miss Hilly to lend her only 75$, but Miss Hilly
refused and didn’t hesitate to put the maid behind bars. That story shows the
perfidy of Miss Hilly. But that scene is very important for the pitch. After
that story, a lot of maids decide to speak for Skeeter’s book. That scene
unfreezes all the plot of the film around the different maids’ stories needed
to publish the book.
